Crystal Alchemist, Artist, Instructor
"Gemstones lead the work. I follow."
For thousands of years, artists searched the Earth for pigment. The curious and the determined climbed mountains for azurite and malachite, crossed deserts for ochres, traded precious lapis across continents, and patiently ground minerals by hand into pigments that have colored generations of art.
My work is lifelong passion and journey is a continuation of this remarkable tradition.
The Crusher
Many of the minerals begin their journey with my friend Jake in New Mexico (The Crusher), who works with family-owned mines and responsibly collects exceptional specimens himself. His respect for the land and the people who steward it ensures that every stone begins its journey to art with integrity. He answered the call and was the first to say yes (!!) to this possibility so many years ago now... and also crush the stones to 50 microns.
The Chemist & The Collective
From there, work moves into my Tucson studio, where geology meets creativity and art meets science.
Together with Jeff Groch, PhD, affectionately known as "Phil Stone," after the legendary Philosopher's Stone, we refine every formulation through considered experimentation, and an unwavering sense of wonder.
Like the alchemists before us, we are fascinated by transformation: how ancient minerals can become extraordinary watercolours without losing the character of the stone itself.
These special paints that I cherish are informed by conversations and the generous wisdom of geologists, miners, lapidarists, crystal dealers, artists, conservators, historians, and crystal healers.
Each brings a different way of understanding the same remarkable stone. Geology reveals how a stone was formed. History tells us how it travelled through civilizations. Artists and pigment makers remind us how colour has shaped human creativity. Metaphysics and crystal healing traditions offer another lens through which people have found meaning, symbolism, and connection.
Each perspective adds another layer to the story. Perhaps that is the truest form of alchemy?
It is not simply transforming rocks into paint, but transforming knowledge into wisdom and colour into ever expanding creativity.
Every BlueSoul Crystal watercolor is the work of many hands and many generous hearts.
The Creative (me!)
I honor time ( and also have to respect it! Fast paint = bad paint)
Every stone carries millions of years of geological history. Every pigment carries centuries of artistic and metaphysical tradition. And every paint I make is a slow, bespoke and small-quantity production.
My hope is that every painting becomes a contemporary chapter in that timeless story.
I am an artist, and not a qualified crystal healer or practitioner.
